TomTom One Regional

The best GPS to have right now, and a steal at $649!

We only saw the original TomTom One three months ago but TomTom has already updated it. The new model is much sleeker with dimensions of 97 x 25 x 82mm (WDH) - 9mm thinner. It weighs only 188g - 72g less.

It still has a 320 x 240, 3.5-inch, touch-screen LCD and 32MB of RAM, although the CPU is reduced from 380MHz to 266MHz. However we still found everything on screen moved fast enough. Bluetooth is supported which means, as with the GO 910, you can make use of the TomTom PLUS services. Weather information is free but speed camera updates, celebrity voice downloads and map downloads all require a premium subscription. Each unit comes with a one-month free trial which we recommend making use of.

While it doesn’t offer all the features of the GO 910 it doesn’t need to. Everything you want from a GPS is here and it’s simple to use. Setting waypoints and planning itineraries is a breeze and the map software is the easiest to follow in the business. Usefully, you can also plan your trip before getting in the car with the TomTom Home software. Maps are stored using an SD card and all of Australia is covered. The car mount is basic but, most importantly, very solid – it won’t move around.

Like all GPS devices it is fallible though. During our extensive testing around Sydney and the Newcastle hinterlands we did receive the occasional impossible instruction – like make a U-turn at 110km/h on a freeway.

But we’re happy that it’s still the best all-in-one GPS of the bunch. At the time of going to press it wasn’t clear whether it was to be called the TomTom One or the TomTom One Regional but, at $649 it’s a bargain and it’ll make a great present at any time of year.
