Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 portable drive review

Seagate’s GoFlex system lets you switch drive controllers: with the appropriate adapter, you can turn a USB 3 drive into a FireWire or eSATA device. Cute, but not necessarily useful. Still, it doesn’t completely ruin the price: 19c per gigabyte isn’t bad, and the 1TB and 1.5TB models are competitive value with pricetags of $150 and $198 respectively.

Sadly, performance isn’t so hot. Across our tests, the 500GB model languished alongside the Buffalo drives. Small-file write performance was an especially weak point. The problem evidently lies with the hard disk controller, as the 1.5TB model – which otherwise matched the performance of the 500GB Iomega eGo – did no better than the 500GB GoFlex in this test.

The drive comes with Memeo Instant Backup and the 500GB drive also comes with encryption and instant backup software. We’re not fans of the drive’s boxy appearance though, and the colours on offer – black, silver, red and blue – look rather flat. Unless you have a particular use for the GoFlex connector, we suggest you give this one a miss.

[Correction: This article originally stated that the drive only comes with a copy of Memeo Instant Backup. This is incorrect. The 500GB drive also comes with encryption software and instant backup software. The article has been corrected.]
