Samsung Galaxy S, big-screened beauty

Samsung Galaxy S, big-screened beauty

Design-wise, the Samsung Galaxy S could almost be mistaken for an iPhone 3GS, except for the huge 4in display.

Despite acres of screen real estate, the phone is barely bigger than its peers. The Super AMOLED display delivers great battery life, even allowing for the Galaxy S’ generous 1500mAh battery. The screen offers vivid pictures which look stunning indoors, plus it handles outdoor glare better than AMOLED.

Unfortunately the screen’s high colour temperature gives its whites a blue tinge, which reduces contrast and makes it difficult to read text outdoors.

Running Android 2.1update1 (Eclair) with a 1GHz processor under the bonnet ensures the Galaxy S is responsive. Menus are silky smooth and apps pop open quickly. Swype is pre-installed, letting you drag your finger across the keyboard rather than tap – not that you need it with such a large onscreen keyboard.

The phone is bogged down with pre-installed Apps from both Samsung and Optus, but the Contact list allows you to integrate voice, text, email, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace into the one interface.

The Social Hub app can also act as a unified messaging inbox. Not to be outdone, Optus offers similar features via the Social View app.

The Galaxy S also features an FM radio and a front-facing camera, which can be used to make video calls. Considering all the pre-installed apps, it’s little surprise Samsung has also added Advanced Task Killer to help you manage how they behave in the background.
