Review: LaCie Rugged Secure 2TB External Hard Drive

Rugged durability and hardware-based encryption

LaCie's Rugged line of external hard drives have long been the go-to for anyone that plans on mistreating their storage. The new Rugged Secure variant adds an extra layer of security to ensure your precious data is safe not just from physical damage, but unauthorised access too.

At its core, the Rugged Secure is a USB-C 2TB external hard drive, but wrapped in a removable bright orange rubber cover, in a tough aluminium case that is rain resistant, drop resistant up to 1.2m and can withstand a 1-ton car driving over it. LaCie even throws in free data recovery for 2 years with the Rugged line of drives. That's how confident they are in the toughness of their external drive.

The Secure part of the product name comes from the included LaCie Toolkit app, and more importantly, hardware encryption built into the drive itself. This is the key aspect that distinguishes the LaCie Rugged Secure 2TB External Hard Drive from simply using any other portable hard drive and using software to add a layer of encryption. Besides offering far more robust security, having it hardware based means you won't see the lag or slow performance software-based encryption may impose.

Setup is very easy, with LaCie's wizard guiding you through encrypting the contents of the hard drive. Once encrypted, every time you plug the drive in to your computer, LaCie Toolkit will pop up and ask for the encryption password to unlock your data.

If you plug the drive in to a computer without LaCie's software installed, all that you can see on the drive are three files - Mac and Windows executables and a readme HTML file that explains what to do with them. Installing the "Unlock Drive for Mac" or "Unlock Drive for Windows" software does what it says on the tin, allows you to enter the encrypted drive's password and view the data stored within.

Of course, if you lose your password you no longer have access to the data - but neither does anyone else, and that's the whole point of having such a high level of security. Reassuringly, the LaCie Rugged Secure 2TB External Hard Drive is covered by Seagate's Rescue Data Recovery Services in case of physical damage, and equally reassuringly, Seagate won't access the data for just anyone that turns up with your drive. Because it's encrypted only you can access it.

It's a product with both specific and general purpose uses, whether for professionals or just regular users with data that needs to be secure. All in a well made and rugged case.
