Possibly a bit... superfluous, but cool tech nonetheless
The Cygnett wireless desk charger is disk shaped device, around the same size as a beer coaster. It charges any device Qi certified. Simply plug in with the cables provided, then lay your chosen device on the base station, voila – charging begins.
It supports 9V fast charging so your device won’t take forever to get juiced up, it also has a non-slip surface which helps when your phone has an incoming call it won’t vibrate off the charging station. It can charge through your protective case (provided said case is under 3mm thickness).
While it is an elegant solution the fact that it is powered by a micro USB cable that needs to be plugged into a socket makes me question why wouldn’t you just charge the device via the cable?
Perhaps if you had multiple compatible devices with different connections (USB-C, Micro USB, Lightning cable) and they were all Qi certified it would make more sense, I would guess that is the target market for this product.
Updated, and a second opinion.
After living with the Cygnett Wireless Desk Charger over the last month we've become thoroughly addicted to this simple little pad. Sure, it takes longer to charge than a direct USB connection but the difference is minimal.
What you get with this is two big wins. First -- and this didn't occur to us during the review process -- it eliminates wear and tear on the phone's USB port. Plugging your phone in every day, especially if you aren't being too careful about it, represents a key potential point of failure, so this eliminates that.
Secondly there's the undeniable cool factor. It a new level of cool to just plonk it down without care, and because it's going to stay on your desk permanently the cable can be hidden away to keep everything nicely elegant.
Plus, everyone that walks by and sees it gets a little oooh-ahhh.
I think Bob's initial review was about right with the score, but after using it myself for a happy month it absolutely gets my recommendation.
