Fuji-Xerox's C1110 balances cheap printing costs with excellent quality

The Fuji-Xerox didn't quite make it into our March laser printer test, but it's priced to compete with the best from that Labs roundup.

At $307, it's one of the cheaper colour laser printers we've seen and it comes with a generous 250-sheet paper tray - one of the larger ones available on printers around the price.

Setting it up is straightforward, and you can connect to a network using the Ethernet port, or directly to a computer using the USB port. There's no wireless, but that's not a deal-breaker.

The C1110's single-pass engine means that sheets only need to run through its interior once, whether you're after colour or black and white prints. That helps it achieve good speeds for printing, and the C1110 is speedy, indeed.

It meets its claimed print speeds of 12ppm colour and 16ppm mono without breaking a sweat. Even for full page A4 photo printing the speed barely dropped, and it churned out 10ppm. It's not quite as fast as our A-Listed Brother printer, but it's no slouch.

We're used to seeing excellent image quality out of Fuji-Xerox printers, and the C1110 is no exception. Mono documents are superbly crisp and clear, and colour photographs, while not at the level of a dedicated photo printer, are of outstanding quality, with vivid colours and only minor blotchiness. It's the best print quality we've seen for a colour laser printer in this price range.

The running costs are slightly higher than for our A-List printer, mostly because there are no high-yield toner cartridges for the C1110. For 10,000 pages, you're looking at a cost around $2100 - not exorbitant, but it's middle of the pack for this class of laser printers.

The Fuji-Xerox's price, speed and print quality make it a very tempting proposition. Only the print costs may outweigh its obvious benefits.

But if you're looking for a low-print-volume colour laser printer, say for a home or home office, this is an outstanding printer that you shouldn't go past.
