Corsair Force 3 120GB

Corsair Force 3 120GB

You'll notice we don't have any results for Corsair's Force 3 drive. This was announced quite recently, a SandForce power SATA 6Gbps model that is destined to be one of Corsair's flagships. We had the drive in our office and were in the process of testing it when word broke that it was being recalled, which left us without viable results to use in the group test.

The issue has effected a few models of 120GB Sandforce SATA 6Gbps SSDs, not just Corsairs, but this is a case where trying to be early with the new generation controller has bitten them. One of the major problems, and causes for the recall, was that Corsair's fix involves the addition of a resistor to the design as well as firmware changes.

To Corsair's credit (and our frustration) it made the decision to recall the first production run of drives rather than wait it out to see if firmware could fix it. The issue is also said to affect 128GB OCZ Vertex 3 drives, however OCZ insists that there is no need to recall, and that firmware updates will be enough to solve the problem (one assumes that the resistor in question is already present on OCZ's drives).

While the specifics of the issue aren't yet clear, it only affected the 120GB models of the Force 3 - unfortunately, these were the models being sent out as review units. We were unable to secure the replacement
model or a different capacity of drive, so we weren't happy including unreal results in the group test. We do expect a replacement to arrive in the office soon, so we'll do a standalone follow up review, hopefully in the next issue.

Verdict
The Corsair Force 3 120GB was looking like a winner in our group test until a last minute recall
