Asus Eee PC 1000HE beats netbook competition in price and power

Put the Eee PC 1000HE next to Asus' latest Seashell models, and it looks overweight. Get past its portly visage, though, and there's plenty to like.

It's relatively heavy, tipping the scales at 1.43kg, but with that weight comes sturdy build quality. The chassis remains firm even under considerable pressure, and the lid feels up to protecting the screen from knocks.

The 10.2in display produces incredibly bright images, with the only annoyance a slightly mottled, grainy quality, but it's more than good enough for all but the most discerning owner. The integrated speakers do a surprisingly good job, making listening to music a pleasurable experience.

The Scrabble-tile keyboard has a sensible and reasonably spacious layout, with only the overly light, shallow key action to count against it.

The wide, responsive trackpad and the pair of buttons beneath are just as good.

Cramming in an 8700mAh battery at the rear doesn't help the 1000HE's weight, but it helped it achieve an impressive 8hrs 10mins of battery life in our light-use test. Those considerable reserves of stamina go hand-in-hand with a generous specification.

The 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 processor is allied with the usual 1GB of memory and 160GB hard disk, while wireless networking is well catered for thanks to draft-n WLAN and Bluetooth.

Asus may not have produced anything exceptional with the 1000HE, but at just $645 its modest achievements are still remarkable. It's a solid, well-built all-rounder with only one problem: the 1005HA.
