Windows 10 for phones to feature "People Sense" friend tracker

New Windows 10 for phones feature will let you locate friends in real time.

Windows 10 for phones is set to have a new feature that will inform you of your friends' location in real time, according to a leaked video.

The service, which was uncovered by Spanish website Microsoft Place, is currently going by the codename Buddy Aware, although it will apparently be called People Sense when finally released. This name would make sense as the existing discovery apps on Windows Phone for Wi-Fi and data usage are called WiFi Sense and Data Sense respectively.

People Sense's rumoured features include sharing your location with certain trusted contacts in real time, integration with navigation apps to give step-by-step directions to your friends, as well as favourite locations to show if you are, for example, at home or at work. The app will also apparently feature messaging and calling integration, so you don't need to leave the app to contact your trusted friends.

Microsoft Place is confident this is a genuine up-coming feature, rather than "an old project that's been cast aside by the boys at Redmond" as the last build date is 17 February.

"This means we're talking about an active project ... [but] you will have to wait a little longer before you can try it yourselves," the website added.

If the rumour is correct, we could see People Sense appearing in a future build of Windows 10 for phones beta. It also raises the possibility that a similar, or even the same feature could appear in the desktop version of Windows 10, given Microsoft's drive to unify the Windows operating system across all platforms.
