Telco gets tough on security, as statistics indicate that a mobile phone is lost or stolen every three minutes in Australia
Vodafone has partnered with McAfee to launch a subscription based mobile security service exclusive to the Vodafone network. The application – called McAfee Mobile security – will be available to post-paid Vodafone customers using Android devices and emphasises data and device protection as much as malware detection.
The security app, currently available via McAfee’s 2012 All Access suite, will cost Vodafone customers $3 per month, added directly to their bill. The app allows for users to remote lock their phone if lost or stolen, locate and track the device, and remotely wipe all data, as well as protect against mobile malware.
The McAfee app also allows for the back up and restoration of all data – including any media files – stored on the phone. James Dampney, Head of Applications & Partner Services for Vodafone stated that as part of the collaboration between McAfee and the telco, all any data transferred as part of a back up or restoration would be unmetered on the Vodafone network and unlimited “cloud” storage would be made available to customers as part of this process.
The deal is currently exclusively between McAfee and Vodafone, however Michael Sentonas, CTO for McAfee Asia Pacific stated that while the company values “partner loyalty”, McAfee might explore other partnerships in the future.
The McAfee Mobile Security app is available via the Vodafone website or the Android marketplace, with one month service for free, followed by $3 per month.
