Samsung launches 3D video on demand for Internet TV range

Samsung extends support to its 3D TV range with dedicated app, featuring 3D movie trailers, music videos, children’s classics and documentaries

The main issue facing 3D TV has always been a lack of content; especially if you don't own a 3D Blu Ray player. Samsung is looking to rectify this problem with the launch of a free 3D Video-On-Demand (VOD) service.

See how Samsung's new 3D TVs compare against LG, Panasonic and Sony.

From 30 June 2011, the 3D VOD service will be available on selected 2011 Samsung Smart TVs in Australia. To access the free content, owners need to  download the ‘Explore 3D’ application available on Samsung Apps.

“The launch of this free 3D VOD service adds to the variety of content already available and strengthens our commitment to Australian consumers in delivering the very best immersive entertainment experience,” said Brad Wright, National Sales and Product Marketing AV Manager for Samsung Electronics Australia.

There will be around 30 3D clips available to view from launch, with plans to release 70 more by the end of the year. According to Samsung, the videos available at launch will include "children's classics" such as Pinocchio, The Ugly Duckling and Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.  (Before you get excited, these appear to be fresh takes from a cheapie studio, rather than the Disney classics remastered in 3D.)

Other curious sounding videos include Mercedes Benz Classic Collection, Dinosaurs of Patagonia, Ultimate Wave Tahiti and Mummies. A selection of Dreamworks 3D trailers will also be available from the service, including Shrek 4, Megamind and Kung Fu Panda 2.
