Breathe a sigh of relief that Prey 2 hasn’t been canned, but don’t hold out hope for a 2012 release.
As far as I’m concerned, a gamer cannot wake to better news. We’ve been waiting with bated breath to hear the fate of Prey 2 ever since some rather nasty rumours started circulating late last month that the game had been cancelled. Considering what had been shown to date, this would have been nothing short of tragic as the game looks amazing: a first-person shooter with Mirror’s Edge-style movement, a Stranger’s Wrath protagonist, set in a Blade Runner world. What’s not to want?
Although Bethesda has finally officially announced that Prey 2 is still alive on its blog—which is obviously the point you should fixate on—it won’t be released this side of 2013. If only for this reason, let us hope that the world doesn’t end this year. The silver lining of this news, though, is that Bethesda has openly admitted that they want to boost the quality of the game before releasing it.
“Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.”
After the divisive release of RAGE, it’s no wonder that Bethesda is so adamant that quality should go first. And I’m more than willing to back their play in this regard.
What do you think?
