Symantec has released Norton 360 v5.0, the latest generation of its do-absolutely-everything security suite

Symantec has released , the latest generation of its do-absolutely-everything security suite.

A revamped interface makes it easier to find your way around the suite’s many features. But the main improvements are behind the scenes, to Symantec’s core security technologies. In particular, Download Insight 2.0 is now better at checking your downloads for threats, while SONAR 3 looks for suspicious behaviour and can uncover even brand new and previous undiscovered malware.

Of course every security suite claims something similar, but Symantec have strong support in early third-party testing.

A recent Dennis Technology Labs report, for instance, tested the effectiveness of 11 top security suites, and Norton 360 v5.0 was the only one to achieve 100% accuracy, detecting all 50 threats.

And while Symantec products are often criticised for being resource hogs, and slowing you down, a report released today by benchmark authors PassMark Software suggests that’s not the case here.

The company pitted Norton 360 v5.0 against other big security suites from McAfee, Kaspersky, BitDefender and Trend Micro, testing them on a range of performance metrics: scan speeds, installation size, how they affected boot time, browsing performance, file management, application installations, network throughput, and much more. And Norton 350 v5.0 came top, thanks to high scores in most areas, including being around 19% faster at scanning than the nearest competitor.

Of course we'll reserve our final judgement till we've done our own full review. And what really matters is how the suite performs for you. If you’d like to find out then there’s a trial version now available, and after completing a simple registration procedure you’ll have 60 days to put Norton 360 v5.0 through just as many tests as you can possibly devise.
