Motorola announces price and release date for Xoom and Atrix

The Motorola Xoom tablet will hit Australian stores on May 24 for an RRP of $840. The Atrix will arrive on June 7 for the same price.

Motorola today announced the pricing and release date for its hotly anticipated Xoom tablet. Priced at an "extremely aggressive" $840, the Motorola Xoom will be available from May 24 exclusively through Telstra.

Capped plans for the Xoom include $29, $49 and $79 per month, with monthly repayment costs ranging from $15 to $25. (The aforementioned plans come with 1GB, 7GB and 12GB of data quota, respectively.)

The Motorola Xoom, which has been available in the US since late March, is a high-end 10.1in tablet that runs on the Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform.

Boasting Full HD video playback with 3D graphics acceleration, two cameras (a front-facing 2.0-megapixel webcam and a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera), 720p video recording and a bevy of hi-tech sensors, the Motorola Xoom is as feature-packed as they come. Support for Adobe Flash and MicroSD memory cards will also be rolled out in a future update.

The Motorola Xoom is expected to compete directly against the Apple iPad 2. However, with a price disparity of around $200, we think it's going to have its work cut out for it in the impending tablet war.

Motorola Atrix price and release date

At the same event, Motorola announced the RRP and release date for the Motorola Atrix. Billed "the world's most powerful smartphone", the Motorola Atrix will be available from June 7 for the same price as the Motorola Xoom - $840. Telstra is also offering the Atrix on a $59 capped plan (including a data quota of 1.5GB), plus $20 monthly repayments.
