Online retailer acquires ailing Australian tech chain.
Big news for Dick Smith fans and customers this morning - brash online retailer Kogan.com has just bought the business.
This means that while the days of the bricks and mortar operation are definitely over, the brand will live on as an online only consumer electronics store.
“I remember as a kid always visiting Dick Smith to look for parts to upgrade my computer," Ruslan Kogan, CEO of Kogan.com, said in today's announcement. "There is a strong history of passion in the Dick Smith community for how technology can improve our lives, and we look forward to helping make it more affordable and accessible for all.”
Of course, Dick Smith hasn't sold PC parts in some time. At least the brands share one thing - they're both named after their respective founders. The new online Dick Smith will be operated by Kogan.com from the 1st of June.
Kogan.com has promised, however, that Dick Smith's customer data will be handled in "accordance with the requirements of Australian and New Zealand privacy law" during the changeover, and will be contacting customers to offer them the opportunity to have their details removed from any databases.
The company has also reported that any customer details shared with Dick Smith after the 4th of January 2016 will not be disclosed to Kogan.com.
