GIGABYTE and G.Skill equipment combine to clock memory at crazy speeds.
Overclocking memory isn't as popular as it used to be, mainly because of the limited performance gains that it establishes for the effort put in. It's purely an exercise in being the best, for the sake of it, but that doesn't take away from the sheer excitement when breaking a previous record.
Coolaler, a Chinese tweaker and enthusiast, managed to experience the thrill of being the best with his latest overclock attempt. Using four G.Skill 4GB DDR3 memory modules, a GIGABYTE Z77X-UD5H motherboard, and an Intel Ivy Bridge i7 3770K, Coolaler slowly raised the clock rate of his memory (running at 11-14-14-35 2T latencies), achieving the record of 3077MHz. The tool used to increment the clock rate was the EasyTune software bundled with GIGABYTE motherboards.
It's important to note that this isn't the highest DDR3 overclock ever recorded, we've seen a lot higher with only two sticks. Seasoned overclockers will gladly tell you that the more modules you have, the harder it is to overclock them. Impressively, the record broken here was with air cooling.
