These are the games worth picking an Xbox One X up for on launch day

Microsoft's 4K box of dreams, the Xbox One X, is nearly upon us. It's hard to say if you'll really need to pick up Microsoft's new Xbox One before we've had a chance to give it a good going over in our review, but we do already know every game that benefits from Xbox One X enhancements on launch.

The best Xbox One X games:

1. Forza Motorsport 7

As you can imagine, Turn10's Forza Motorsport 7 is a flagship Xbox One X title. Not only is it intended to showcase the console's use of high-res textures and silky-smooth 60fps gameplay, but it's also a technical marvel. If it wasn't already beautiful enough on Xbox One, it's set to get HDR capabilities and 4K textures on Xbox One X.

2. Halo 3

Although released on the Xbox One Halo: Master Chief Collection, the original Xbox 360 version of Halo 3 is set to get a whole host of enhancements on Xbox One X. The major improvement is the introduction of anti-aliasing, 10-bit colour depth and HDR. Basically, Halo 3 is going to look very good indeed.

3. Middle Earth: Shadow of War

Sequel to the unexpected Xbox One and PS4 hit Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Shadow of War continues the huge, open-world romp with orcs but now with higher-res textures. Not only is this a vast game with deep gameplay elements like the Nemesis system, but it's also going to look gorgeous on Xbox One X.

4. Gears of War 4

The PC version of Gears of War 4 already has 4K capability and high-resolution textures and now that's going to come to Xbox One X. As an Xbox One game, Gears of War 4 was already reasonably impressive to look at, so now it's going to be even more attractive.

5. Assassin's Creed: Origins

After a year off, Ubisoft is back to the Assassin's Creed franchise with Origins – a game that takes us to Ancient Egypt to find the start of the Assassin's guild. The Xbox One X means all of this vast world is brought to life in excellent clarity, with the use of high-res textures and 4K capabilities too.

6. Cuphead

Of all the games that aren't really in need of a 4K upgrade, Cuphead is one of them. Thanks to its wonderful art style of classic 1920s cartoons it doesn't really need to look pin-sharp, but it's a flagship Xbox One title and so it'll be getting upgraded for Xbox One X. The inclusion of silky-smooth 60fps will certainly make a difference to this bullet-hell shooter, so if you've already sunk time into Cuphead you'll notice the improvements straight away.
