We're moving to a new comments system called Disqus. Here's what the new features will include and what it will mean for the site.
Everyone, we're making some improvements to the PC & Tech Authority site.
We're moving to a new comments system called Disqus next week, which we're hoping will be a bit quicker and easier than the system you're using now.
In the new system, you'll be able to post comments and have discussions under the articles on the site, like you do now (we're adding comments to photo galleries too). You'll also get some new features, like the ability to track comment threads. If you're visiting the mobile version of the site on a phone, you'll now be able to add a comment. This system is meant to be better at dealing with spam too.
But it would be difficult to add these features for you while the current forum system is in place. We could leave things as they are - but we're at the point where we want to improve things like spam levels and general usability.
Instead, what we're going to do is decommission the forum and concentrate on bringing in the new features for you to use. What this means is that you'll still be able to add comments and take part in discussions. But not in a forum - you'll do all this in one place, in the comments area under articles.
We expect that some people might be disappointed they can't post in our forums anymore. Keep in mind, lots of what is happening in the forum is a copy of our article comments area. Instead of having two copies of everything, now there will be one. We'll also be posting discussion pages - we want you to weigh in on what topic threads should be started.
We hope to have Disqus up and running on Wednesday next week and you won’t need to create a new account - our web site technical team says you'll use the same login you use now to post comments. Our moderators have been great, and they're getting moderator privileges too.
In the end, a lot of the thoughtful, informed stuff is happening in response to articles on the site, rather than as forum-only discussions. We hope the Disqus system will give the people with something to say an even better system for doing it.
