The new Star Trek game looks more like a Mass Effect mod than real Trek. Where are the space battles? The optimism? The Green Orion Slave Women?!?!
I quite liked the last Star Trek movie. I thought the resetting of the timeline was cleverly done; I liked the cast (especially Karl Urban, who'se just the nicest guy); I liked the new Enterprise. Hell, I even liked the lense flare!
However it must be noted that there was a slight change to way the action was paced, not to mention that there was a lot more in the way of in-person violence. Star Trek had more fist-fights and shootouts than any Trek film before it, but at least it balanced it all with plot and character. Unlike the new Star Trek game, coming out next year, which seems to cleave to the all-action, all-the-time gaming aesthetic.
In fact, it looks more like Mass Effect without the roleplaying.
The recently released trailer could really be any generic space action game, and the new screenshots aren't much better at showing any kind of real Trek feel. I can't work out whether that's because the new flare-tastic look of Trek is not yet iconically recognisable, or because the game is dramatically missing the point.
One thing that worries is the possibilty that we can see the direction the film franchise will take from what we know of the game so far. A licensed title like this, complete with likenesses of all the main actors, would be heavily influenced by the major movie stakeholders. So does this mean that Kirk and Spock are being reduced to little more than action heroes? Figures to leap about map after map, ducking into convenient, waist-high cover along the way? That's a terrible use of such great and inspiring characters.
Even more alarming, is the lack if any real shots of what - to my mind at least - Star Trek has always been about. Exploration, star travel, the romance of the unknown... Where are the strange new worlds and new civilisations? And if they are there, are they being reduced merely to stage props for phaser battles?
If you think I'm over-thinking this... I probably am. I'm in the middle of a huge kick of Trek nostalgia at the moment (I'm planning a Trek RPG - it's research!), so the values of Star Trek are something that's on my mind a fair bit right now. That sense of shared hardship and exploration, the friendship and trust, the idea that we can better ourselves. Trek's always been not about the spaceships and explosions - though they help, I'll admit - but people, and how they relate to each other.
I'm just not seeing that in the new game. I know it's a long way from completion, but still... is wrong to expect some actual Star Trek content from a Star Trek game?
