How to: Stream VLC Player to Chromecast

Want to stream content from your own library to Chromecast from VLC Player? Here’s how to do it.

VLC Player is, and will probably always be, the best free way to watch media files and DVDs on your computer or Android phone. However, if you use it as your default player, you’ll already know that it currently doesn’t support Chromecast on PC or Android.

Worry not, because you can use VLC player to watch media and have it cast over to your TV via Chromecast – it just takes a bit of fiddling first.

How to stream VLC Player to Chromecast from PC

Streaming a file from VLC to your Chromecast used to be a simple endeavour thanks to a Chrome VLC plugin and Google’s Cast extension. However, since version 42 of the Chrome browser, you can no longer stream files so easily. Instead, you’ll need a cumbersome – but quick – workaround to get the job done.

  1. Buy a Google Chromecast
  2. Install Google Chrome and add the Google Cast extension to it

  3. Set up your Chromecast to work with your PC or Mac

  4. Open VLC Player and start the media file you want to stream to your TV

  5. Open a new tab in Chrome and, using Google Cast, select “Cast screen/window (experimental)”

  6. Your entire computer desktop will now be streaming to Chromecast. Click back to VLC Player and knock it into fullscreen mode and voila, you’ve got VLC Player streaming to your TV via Chromecast

How to stream VLC Player to Chromecast from Android

While VLC Player for Android will eventually come with Chromecast support, it currently doesn’t. This means you’re left with one of two options: a) find an alternative Android video player that does stream to Chromecast (of which there are many), or b) do it the long-winded, battery-draining way because you really have to use VLC Player.

If the latter option is your preference, here’s how to go about doing it.

  1. Install the Chromecast app on your Android device and pair your Chromecast to it

  2. Open VLC Player and start the file you want to cast

  3. Open the Chromecast app

  4. Tap the menu button and select “Cast screen / audio”

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to cast your device’s screen to your Chromecast

  6. Go back to VLC Player and fullscreen the video and voila you’re done!
