Samsung Gear VR uses smartphone for VR

The user interface for Samsung's virtual reality headset has been leaked online.

The mobile interface for Samsung's upcoming Gear VR virtual reality headset has been leaked online.

SamMobile claims to have seen "an early version of Gear VR Manager", a smartphone app that controls the headset.

According to the report, Gear VR Manager comes with two preinstalled apps - VR Panorama, VR Cinema - although it wasn't able to test them as it doesn't actually have the handset.

However, SamMobile was able to test the HMT Manager, the smartphone app that manages the device, without needing to connect it to the Gear VR itself.

It revealed the Gear VR will use a modular design, which lets the user dock a Samsung Galaxy mobile device with the VR headset via USB 3.

The headset is not equipped with any sensors itself, and will instead use the mobile device's accelerometer, gyroscope and processing power to track head motion, which are calibrated to the Gear VR at setup.

It will also use the Samsung device's AMOLED screen, instead of having one built in, and wearers can use voice commands to launch games.

If you're worried about losing yourself in a virtual world, never fear: you can set an hourly message to pop up and remind you what you're seeing isn't real.

According to an earlier report from SamMobile, the Samsung Gear VR will launch at IFA in September this year, alongside the Galaxy Note 4.

While the hardware is being made by Samsung and will according to an earlier report run Tizen OS, the actual VR software has apparently been developed in collaboration with Facebook's Oculus VR.

Nevertheless, the finished products are expected to go head-to-head, along with Sony's Project Morpheus, in the next phase of immersive tech experiences for consumers.
