Hi All

Well, I finally bit the bullet, threw caution to the wind and used the Vista Business disc set that came with my Lenovo T61 and obliterated XP SP3.

Sounds easy, doesn't it, but it's not just set and forget.

After following all the instructions, setting the boot order in bios to first boot the DVD Drive, I turned the computer off and then rebooted with the first DVD (the only one that will boot)to set up the boot.
So far so good.
The set up asks for the next DVD, the operating system. This I dutifully do and am asked to select "next" in the box when the dics is in the drive. This I do and am greeted with "this is the wrong disc!!!" and the whole show goes "poof", into a Dos type screen and saying that there is no bootable medium. Bugger!!!

I try again and again, checking all what I have done, but to no avail.

Now, I get cunning. What if the "little box" is lying to me, because "next" obviously means next to nothing, so I try again, not clicking next after the first disc and see what happens.
Well, I was right, it loads, so I gingerly move the offending lying little box to the side and continue on, disc after disc, 4 in all for what seems like an eternity.

After all the discs have loaded, I click out the "lying little box" and it goes without a whimper.

Now the wait really begins, with the computer going throurh it's many re-boots, script boxes, etc. At one point I thought I would have to will the final install to a future generation as it was looking like I would not see it in my life time.Anxious

Finally, a long time (or so it seemed), after the final boot, VISTA Business burst forth in all it's glory and frankly it was worth the wait.

Now to install all my stuff and truly make it a "Home", but THAT, is a story for another day.

Cheers

PS. It was worth all the effort, but only a masochist would say that.lol

I did the same with my T61, but I didn't have the 'Next' issue you were having. I was angry that I couldn't dual boot XP and Vista though. Stupid custom OS. Sad

Yeah, it was a strange one that "Next" issue, but I did come across it in a Thinkpad forum, after the fact, of course. So, I am not "Robinson Crusoe".

Yeah, get away from OEM's and get to Retail to control the boot, but of course that means an open source system to set up the partitions and boot menu. Lots of work.

Cheers

ones and zeros mal, ones and zeros.

Now you know how the fanboys feel when asked to shut down the computer by clicking the start button.

Or the novice searching for the "any" keyWink

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

Ask questions. There's no such thing as a stupid one, just stupid answers. (mostly)

Yep, OS's 101.lol

Come to think of it I started out on a Mac (many eons ago) without a clue, but with a bit of reading up, had it basically sussed in a couple of days. Sort of never went through the classic novice phase as I had a mis-spent childhood with radios/circuit boards/ham radio etc all drummed into me by my now sadly deceased old Dad who was what you would now call a "geek" for his time. I grew up with soldering irons, boards, valves, capacitors, resistors and the latter period with transistors, so you can see I really didn't have a chance.Wink

That is my "sad" story.Boo hoo!

Cheers
