I caught an interesting interview of the communications minister Senator Stephan Conroy on radio national this morning. I think that if you're interested in the interwebs, you may like to listen to it. I find it just a little disturbing. These are Senator Conroy's contact details if you feel inclined to make your views known to him.

As someone said yesterday elsewhere: "welcome to China!" ...
The thing that is a major sticking point of this whole ISP level Filtering is that the government "deems" what is to be filtered... So really they could end up filtering everything...
In the late 90's before I moved into IT I was working in Libraries in the TAFE system in Western Australia around the time they trailed a filter ...it was pretty much a word filter system that blocked words from a list entered into the software. It got canned as nursing and child care studies could not do any research as it was blocking a heap of sites.
In the early 2000's I went to a ALIA run meeting on Net filters at the State Library of Victoria and they compared filters / net nanny's of the time and found that they where still using user entered lists to block sites - Funny part was these filters where even filtering out political sites of the opp party at the time and some other organisations that where actually communtiy aid related..
No filter is going to be fool proof... I can see some DNS and proxy workaround occuring; etc...
we are not china but the PM speaks it and wants the same system they have there... I think alot of people are going to be voting against them next election with this type of BS ...
Sad state ...1984 coming soon to Australia
...madness be my friend...

It's starting to look like this crap isn't going to fly.I get a sneaky suspicion that Conroy may have thrown this game. In the interview on radio national he sounded like a rank amateur. I suspect the filter thing was one of those promises that get thrown in in the heat of an election. Rather than talk about core promises like someone else we all know, he sold the idea in such a way that it'd be howled down and buried. Makes sense to me.
