If the laptop has bluetooth, that would be my choice in a mouse. It takes a little more setting up, but there's no dongle to loose or cable to connect up. 2 button with scroll wheel if you're just after basics. Carry spare batteries in the laptop bag. If the laptop doesn't have bluetooth, I'd go for a cable mouse. Less bits to loose.
Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.
Ask questions. There's no such thing as a stupid one, just stupid answers. (mostly)

My experience with bluetooth mice is that the technology is great, yes possibly a bit slow but other than that pretty good. But.... I have had several occasions where the BT pairing between the devices (pc and mouse) occasionally gets dropped for no apparent reason. Provided you know how to re-connect the BT mouse, this is only a small inconvenience, but can be frustrating - particularly for the less experienced user.... This problem has been experienced between Dell notebooks and their re-badged logitec BT mouse on quite a few systems that I know of (Mine: a Dell XPs M1530 with Dell BT Mouse, also a relatives Dell Inspiron 1525 with the same Dell BT mouse). It has been happening for over 6 months now and still no real solution has been forthcoming that I am aware of. I am sure it is merely a technical/software problem that will one day be solved, but it does make me feel I should have waited a bit longer for the technology to mature more before jumping in.

Hi All What my solution to the laptop mouse situation, is a Kensington Mini Mouse from Franklins for about $ 9.95. They last for absolutely for ages, easily as long as the other more expensive alternatives and come with a neat little bag to boot, so that it's "tail" doesn't get tangled up with other leads in the laptop bag. Quite small, very responsive and the best of all, cheap. Cheers Malai5

There is a tiny amount of lag in the mouse, and there might be in the keyboard (haven't really noticed it), but I still manage to dominate games. *shrugs*. It's most defintely acceptable.

I like my "mice" hard wired. Just doing my bit to cut down on the RF clutter. Cheers Malai5. Edited by malai5: 4/11/2008 09:08:09 PM

I don't think that rule applies to computer mouses. Vito Cassisi: Tech Blog

The RF from short range bluetooth mice isn't really going to make a difference anywhere except inside your house. Maybe your next door neighbours too. It'll be a class 2 bluetooth device, so will have a theoretical range of ~10m. Granted, if everyone turned on their bluetooth stuff and start doing things, it'd generate a little bit of clutter, but it's using a bit of the spectrum that's designated for random crap like this (which, coincidentally, is also the bit of the spectrum where devices must be capable of accepting interference from other devices on the same frequency), so it doesn't really matter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISM_band
