Whose using what and why? on this laptop, running XP Home, I'm running Avast. I'd first heard of it here on this site and, as I'd just done a full reformat and re-install on it, it looked like the perfect chance to try something new. There doesn't seem to be much of a hit on system resources. Scans don't make a noticeable impact on performance and updates are a quiet process till the yank tells me it's been done. When the recent spate of virus Emails purporting to come from Microsoft came through it grabbed them straight off and asked me what to do with them. I chose delete. so far so happy. I'd give it a 4 out of 5. So what have you got and waddaya reckon about it? Edited by Slatts: 24/10/2008 07:53:09 PM

on my main systems I'm running Zone Alarm security suit 7 on XP Pro. I've been running it since it was ZASS 6 and was the toast of the reviewers. I've had no problems with it except a couple of months ago when a Windows update broke it. The scans seem to take a fair portion of forever on my Athlon 64 3200+ system with 1.5 gig of ram. Once again, it doesn't seem to take to much of a chunk out of the available resources. With the last Key update about a year ago I bought a 3 machine license for under $100. I don't know what it's going for now. Last I heard, ZA had a bit of a problem playing nice with Vista. I don't know if that's been fixed yet. I'd say a 3.5 to 3.75 out of 5 Edited by Slatts: 24/10/2008 07:55:25 PM

It's been a few years since I used nod32. It was my free AV of choise for a few years on win 98. It had a small foot print and a very good rep. It used to win all the mag AV shootouts. Anyone still using it? d'ya like it? Why? Edited by Slatts: 24/10/2008 07:51:13 PM

I first heard about Bull Guard AV here a few months ago. Have you used it? How's it run?

Ok I know I'm late into this one as well, but here goes.
CA AV on laptop and two desktops, AVG Free on another two PC's and McAfee small business on a couple of others - still under trial.
CA used to be great but know is a drag on resources, AVG free still excellent and McAfee - so far is my fav, lite on resources and seems to pick everything up.

Computer Associates, they used to use zone alarm security suite under license. They tweaked it for performance and it ran sweet. Unfortunately they went and turned it into the next norton bastards

OK all, I am going to be really honest here and say that I actually run Norton 2008 Internet Security on my old Vaio laptop and I have to say that it has given me NO problems at all. I probably am living a charmed life or am living in a parallel universe and don't realise it because I seem to be the only one who has ever said this. Sure, it slows things down a bit, but it's all relative when one is dealing with a 6 year old lappie that is starting to get the computer equivalent of Alzhimers. Now where was I (oops it must be catching) Now, of course on my Linux Desktops (yes I have more than one)One can't have too much Linux, can one. )I don't need any AV, except in Virtual Box on Linux where I run XP Prof SP3 and for that I use Avast AV. Have to say I am pretty impressed at how little (if any) effect it has on the speed even running virtually, on XP. That has to be some kind of endorsement of a FREE AV. Anyway, I guess being used to "free stuff" I should realise that it can and mostly is, as good or better than the "stuff" you pay good hard earned semolians for. The best antivirus soltion is.... Me! When encountering a virus, I will do the following... -Use HijackThis and Process Explorer to identify what and where the viruses are, and how they start -Use a PE boot disk (Such as BartPE) to manually delete the virus files, load up the registry hives of the infected windows installation and remote startup entries. For prevention of viruses, I use common sense (ie, don't be teh first person to use a crack or what not, stay away from various nasty sites etc). For detection of viruses I use taskmanager, network activity lights* and general observations of how the system is behaving. I use this solution every week, sometimes every few days. I defeat every virus I come across. I am an onsite IT guy, so I see quite a few. * - the only virus I have ever had on my PC I found because my PC had a constant flood of activity over the internet. On further observation, it was a spambot that I had been infected with. I can't remember how I got it, but I know I knew how I got it back then. VET AV (which has since been taken over by Computer Associates) didn't pick it up. I learnt quite a bit from this virus, about where they like to hide, how to do various things to get rid of them, etc etc. (FINE. Say what you will. So what if I don't tecnically count because I'm not a piece of software. See what I care )

What he says it true though. Virus are pretty much limited to illegal goods. I still recommend anti-virus though. Vito Cassisi: Tech Blog

OK Sqiddy, one can do all that, but the big question is WHY??? That to me is all just common sense and the "hoops" you have to jump through, why do it manually when you can get ONE program to do it for you without all the fiddly bits and pieces. Just remember this though. You have to get it ALL right, ALL the time, a virus/trojon has only to have ONE slipup/hole on your part and you're gone. You can't stay awake forever. That old saying is ringing in my ears: "Pride goeth before a fall" And in the immortal words: "Do ya feel lucky, Punk???" Cheers Malai5 Edited by malai5: 15/11/2008 10:01:13 PM
