If the free programs are well known, then there's as much chance of a virus as paid software.

Not really. BitTorrent is incredibly well known, but there are literally hundreds of places where you can download it, along with some other crap (like the Yahoo Toolbar for example) that will only become apparent when you go to install it...

Easy, download it from a trusted source. I've never had issues with downloading free software.

Because there are trusted sites doesn't mean the 'untrusted' one just dissapear. They're still out there and many of them proclaim to be trustworthy, although that is entirely beside the original point. Tongue

Btw, I've never had any problems with freeware either, although I've not downloaded a huge amount of it. However, I imagine if I tried to run critical things like AV off free-ware, then I would.

Jim, after Nat's done with himAnxious

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

Ask questions. There's no such thing as a stupid one, just stupid answers. (mostly)

Go for it then. Just don't come to an open forum and ask for an opinion if you don't want it. Speak to the hand

Funnily enough, I don't like Symantec because it's resource hungry and difficult to un-install. But when I was using '03 back there, I never get a virus with it either... Tongue

i didnt say i wanted an opinion and what you thought about free software. i wanted help on a missing .bin file if you read the original post. i dont come on here expecting everyone to agree with my opinions, how far in life do you get with that attitude? is the way you put things jim, not your actual opinion.

I don't need calming. I don't know what answer you want, so I'm not going to bother trying. Like I said, good luck with the computer.
