I've got this really good tiger repelant. I've had it for over thirty years and it works perfectly. I've never had a tiger come near me.

Perhaps it's just that people who want free stuff are also more likely to download porn and viruses, rather than a reflection of the software...

It would be a correlational (rather than causal) relationship, so no, not necessarily. Still, it would make a lot of sense that people who are willing to download and install free AV software are also more willing to download and install other free programs and in doing so, more likely to expose themselves to nasty programs.

Here's a little snippit I found over in the open source / proprietary thread. Quote:jim.dude wrote: Quote:malai5 wrote: Yes Jim, the set and forget, go make a cup of tea and the uninstall is done scenario is how it has always been for me, up until this latest event. And yes, I have always used Norton AV on this laptop and have not had any problems. Maybe my dream run is at an end, maybe XP has woken up to the fact that an agent from the dark side has taken up residence on the D drive in the form of LinuxPC in VirtualBox. Maybe I have offended the fickle god of PCs and this is my punishment. Maybe all of the previous are coming home to roost.
However, the reinstall into a newly cleaned system seems to be running just fine (fingers crossed)
Cheers

Meh, you're problem was paying for rubbish software courtesy of Symantec. Sad There are so many better alternatives, many of which are free no less (e.g. AVG or ZoneAlarm). I found a definition over their for hypocrisy to. Jim can find it for you, he posted it.

Just because Symantec is crap and AVG is better than Symantec (i.e. nothing), it doesn't therefore follow that AVG is good! Lmao... Think about it like this Slattsy, a cheap condom is better than unsafe sex, but abstinence is better again...it's a hierarchical thing. hi Nat. If you start charging $60 an hour to work on peoples boxes (or booze to the price of) then you'll find they start searching for their drivers themselves. either that or you could start a really first class wine cellar. Good to hear about your sinuses. Not so good about the cure though. I'd say time cures all ills or some such trite comment but I don't do clichés. Edited by Slatts: 24/8/2008 05:38:28 PM
