The conclusion is hardly illogical...in line with the past few posts, clearly if a 'careful' surfer has no need for AV surfer and I have AV software, then I'm not a careful surfer. In which case, paying for AV software makes good sense. Tongue

1. Uninstall it.
2. Go to the store, part with some cash for a copy of any AV suite that isn't full of half-baked coding.

You do realise that AVG and Avast are free home-user versions of business software.

Emphasis on the 'FREE' version.

They use the same technology and virus updates, the main difference is the licence.

I've got this really good tiger repelant. I've had it for over thirty years and it works perfectly. I've never had a tiger come near me.lol

Which is interesting, because I've not actually heard anyone complain of getting anything using the paid for one, but people with viruses + free AV software is very, very common occurence...

Perhaps it's just that people who want free stuff are also more likely to download porn and viruses, rather than a reflection of the software... Think

It would be a correlational (rather than causal) relationship, so no, not necessarily. Still, it would make a lot of sense that people who are willing to download and install free AV software are also more willing to download and install other free programs and in doing so, more likely to expose themselves to nasty programs.

Despite the spiraling cost of living, it remains a popular activity.

If the free programs are well known, then there's as much chance of a virus as paid software.

How'd the reformat go? I find if I can see 2 monitors where normally there's only 1 it's not a good idea to get op close and personal with the hard driveEek!

Not really. BitTorrent is incredibly well known, but there are literally hundreds of places where you can download it, along with some other crap (like the Yahoo Toolbar for example) that will only become apparent when you go to install it...

Maybe I have offended the fickle god of PCs and this is my punishment. Maybe all of the previous are coming home to roost.

However, the reinstall into a newly cleaned system seems to be running just fine (fingers crossed)

Cheers

Meh, you're problem was paying for rubbish software courtesy of Symantec. Sad There are so many better alternatives, many of which are free no less (e.g. AVG or ZoneAlarm).

I found a definition over their for hypocrisy to. Jim can find it for you, he posted it.Wink

That doesn't make any sense at all. Just because Symantec is crap and AVG is better than Symantec (i.e. nothing), it doesn't therefore follow that AVG is good! Lmao... lol

Think about it like this Slattsy, a cheap condom is better than unsafe sex, but abstinence is better again...it's a hierarchical thing.

Easy, download it from a trusted source. I've never had issues with downloading free software.

hi Nat.
If you start charging $60 an hour to work on peoples boxes (or booze to the price of) then you'll find they start searching for their drivers themselves.Wink

either that or you could start a really first class wine cellar.Big Smile!

Good to hear about your sinuses. Not so good about the cure though.Anxious

I'd say time cures all ills or some such trite comment but I don't do clichés.Smile Oops!
