yup nothing about resetting BIOS or default BIOS passwords. i tried updating the BIOS but apparently my hard disk has a lock or something on it and to remove the lock to update the BIOS i have to access the BIOS which requires a password Mad

Did you read page 151 of the service manual Nat?

Also page 91 has the procedure for replacing the CMOS battery. Looks like a major pain.

Edit: this might help;

pretty sure i just gave up

Quote:
Password removal is strictly controlled Hewlett-Packard and authorized support providers must ensure
with written evidence that the notebook being “cleansed” is actually in the possession of the notebook’s
actual and current owner This requires a sales receipt showing the notebook serial number and owner’s
name, or a written statement from the owner attesting that he or she is the owner of the notebook. The
statement can be a fax copy of the document The fact that the notebook is in the hands of an HP
representative on behalf of the customer is not evidence of ownership In addition, HP will not remove
the password of a notebook for any non-owner, even if it is requested by law enforcement agencies

yea no time for them.

If you can get to it in Ubuntu, perhaps you could try formatting it in ubuntu then see if Windoze can see it?
just a thought though.

If it can't be fixed with old fencing wire, buy some new fencing wire...
