Have you budgeted for an OS Adoski?
What would you want to use?

Windows 7 is due out by the end of the month. Are you going to run 32 bit or go for 64?
With the 32 bit version the upgrade path for your RAM stops at 4Gb whereas 64bit will take whatever you could sensibly throw at it.
Are you a starving student? Going by your price range I wouldn't be too surprised..Wink
You might qualify for the student discount for win 7 that's supposed to be coming for Aus.
If you get the pro version it comes with XP compatibility mode that's basically a copy of XP running in a virtual machine. It costs a fair bit more but will let you run games that win 7 doesn't like. Just a thought.

Of course, as you're building a system from scratch I assume you'd qualify for the OEM version. Check with your supplier for pricing.

Off the top of my head I'd say the PSU is a bit on the light side.
I'm not much chop on system building so see what others say.

edit: added link.

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

Ask questions. There's no such thing as a stupid one, just stupid answers. (mostly)

I've been using the release candidate of win 7 on this old (almost 5 years) box and it runs very quickly. I can't see a speed dif between it and XP pro.
I can't see a reason to load a new system with an almost 10 year old OS when there's a flash new one on the horizon. Particularly if the new one will run XP seamlessly if you get the pro or ultimate versions.
That's my thoughts for what they're worth.

Any reason you're using ExpressPCParts?

Try http://www.staticice.com.au/ to find better prices. Where abouts do you live, so I can point you to a decent store?

Have a look at Scorptech as well. They seem to have some prety good deals.
But I'm pretty sure they're only in melb so postage may be an issue.
Oh, and I reckon that processor would be fine.

If it can't be fixed with old fencing wire, buy some new fencing wire...

MSY and ITEstate are the places you should be looking at.

Regarding your parts, I'd do the following (using MSY prices):

Antec NSK4480B-II - $112
Intel E7500 - $145
Gigabyte EP43-UD3L - $110
Western Digital 320G - $58
Pioneer 218 - $54
512MB Gigabyte 4670 - $86
2GB 800Mhz SuperTalent - $37

Total: $602

It costs a little more, but you don't have to pay delivery. You also get higher quality components, and a better graphics card.

Nope. You'll need about a $1500+ budget for that.
