About 12 years ago a mate and I were fishing around the islands out from Mackay. We'd been diligently monitoring the weather forecast from the local rescue group on his VHF radio as there was a cyclone brewing up North in the Coral Sea. All day the report had it North of Townsville. The conditions were a bit uncomfortable but the boat was seaworthy and big enough to handle the conditions but the open water crossing back to Mackay harbor was "interesting". The next day I found out that due to a glitch at the Met Bureau, the cyclone report hadn't been updated all day. The cyclone had in fact been just off Bowen. Today we have cyclone Hamish sitting just out from Innisfail and coming straight down the coast. A couple of seconds on the interweb and i can see where it was at 12 hourly intervals, a pretty accurate prediction of where it's most likely to go in the next 48 hours and if I want I can call up a live radar image of it in near as bugger it, real time. Gotta love the internet. On the downside, I know I shouldn't put the boat in the water today and should instead go outside and tie everything in the yard down.

It's supposed to reach cat 4 tonight. I was in Townsville when Althia went through it. We watched house all round us loosing their roofs. It's scary stuff.

Some times I suspect you have a nasty streak nat. At least they're forecasting it to drop down to a cat 3 before it crosses. Course a cat 3 is nothing to sneeze at, but it's a hell of a lot less frightening than a cat 5 with 295K winds! Category Strongest gust (km/h) Typical effects 1 Tropical Cyclone Less than 125 km/h Gales Minimal house damage. Damage to some crops, trees and caravans. Boats may drag moorings. 2 Tropical Cyclone 125 - 164 km/h Destructive winds Minor house damage. Significant damage to signs, trees and caravans. Heavy damage to some crops. Risk of power failure. Small boats may break moorings. 3 Severe Tropical Cyclone 165 - 224 km/h Very destructive winds Some roof and structural damage. Some caravans destroyed. Power failure likely. 4 Severe Tropical Cyclone 225 - 279 km/h Very destructive winds Significant roofing and structural damage. Many caravans destroyed and blown away. Dangerous airborne debris. Widespread power failures. 5 Severe Tropical Cyclone More than 280 km/h Extremely destructive winds Extremely dangerous with widespread destruction.

OK, OK! I take it back Storm chasing? Sounds like a dog chasing a buss. If you caught it, what would you do with it?

We have only just started getting actual rain. Has been overcast for the past few days but still dry. Winds are nothing special either. Will know this arvo when it gets here I guess.

All day the forecast was for the cyclone to go harmlessly out to sea. Then I saw this Nothing if not confusing At least it's weakening while it's playing silly buggers. Edit: I've just noticed that the threat map has been updating in my posts as the met bureau updates the site. Edited by Slatts: 9/3/2009 07:55:59 PM
