I've used flash Sandisk 8Gb for about a year but a few days ago it is was not recognised by my PC running on XP.
More experienced people tell me that these flash memories can give surprises like this, but I have a lot of important documents on this Sandisk and don't know what recovery software to look for. Also i've been told that such recovery is very expensive which is bad news because on my student budget I can't afford it.

Could someone please help me with data recovery from this flash Sandisk-maybe there is some shareware or freeware that can do this one -off task?

Thanks to anyone with practical advise!

Helen

Hey Helen,

I've had to search for recovery software before and I can't say I've come across any free programs. I've found one useful one called RecoverMyFiles, but it's around the $69.95 price Sad

Doing a quick search, I'm finding that the average price is between $40-$70 for any recovery software.

Is it a USB Flash Drive or a flash card for a camera or phone or something?

If a USB Flash Drive:
- How do you know that the drive is bust? Have you tried it on any other PC's?
- What happens when you plug it into your XP machine?
- Have you tried plugging it into other USB ports on your machine?

Specifically which Sandisk (Extreme etc ).

Some of them come with a little card you can use to download a recovery program from the internet for free.

I bought a Sandisk II compact flash (4Gb) the other day and it came with a URL to download the software.

Maybe check out what card it is, look at Sandisks website and look through the packaging / manual / warranty paperwork(If you still have it).

Try Advanced File Recovery. I had to reformat my hard drive to reload windows and I deleted the second hard drive on my computer where my back up data was stored. And this program helped me to solve the problem. As far as I know, this program can work with different media types and with USB Sticks too.
