I have windows Vista and have just downloaded sp2 for Vista. As my external hard drive is full, I have just added a seagate 1tb external drive. i tried to run a backup to this drive and I get a vss error - the problem occured when trying to contact the vss writer. is my problem the Vista sp2, a problem with my new seagate external hard drive or some thing. Alternately, is there a good freeware backup utility that I can use? Will problems with vss cause further problems?

Can you see the drive in explorer peter?
Probably a silly question but what the hell.
Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.
Ask questions. There's no such thing as a stupid one, just stupid answers. (mostly)

The problem is not the drive - it is the vss - shadow copy service that is crook. It seemed to fix itself by rebooting the computer. Oh well, ometimes the simplest solutions for the hardest problems...
