A friend of mine is looking at purchasing a notebook. She would like it to be capable of playing DVD’s/movie’s, as well as current games. However the primary use will be for internet/e-mail and basic word processing. Their budget is $1800. Of course they would prefer to spend less that this, but are after value for money. Any advice or recommendations would be very much appreciated.

I believe she would prefer to go with either Toshiba or ASUS. But I will defiantly take dell into consideration.

The Toshiba A2's are always good value and I have never had one come back, touchwood.
The are often available in all sort of packages.

I have had good experiences with both Toshiba and Sony Vaio notebooks but I hear this is not always the case with Sony. Asus, however have so many notebooks in the price range you are looking at that you should be able to pick up a deal with way more features than you need from one of the bigger retailers, but I would get in quick before the Aussie Dollar goes any further "South". Does anyone know anything about the battery life on a TOSHIBA n100-12s? I have been offered one at a low price, but don't am always dubious about the whys and wheres when it comes to "low price" offers. I have always had good experiences with Toshiba, but...

With the mentioned budget you can bay a mac laptop also. I would personly suggest you to go with MAC this is very good. If you don’t want mac just go with dell or Compaq. Both dell and Compaq do not lose there performance by time. I have used other and dell also. I am very much comfortable with mac. But the second option is dell and third is Compaq.

Dude, the OP is a year old, I doubt they're still looking for a laptop.
And Basra, the n100s are Just like almost any other atom based netbooks. It has exactly the same spec as my old aspire1. Which does the job but is nothing special.
If it can't be fixed with old fencing wire, buy some new fencing wire...
