My current desktop is running off an onboard GPU and I want to replace it with a decent graphics card. I also want to upgrade the HDD as it no longer has enough space.

My current specs are as follows:

CPU: AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core, ~2.7Ghz
RAM: 3Gb DDR2
OS: Windows XP Home SP3

I'm only looking to spend what is needed to upgrade to a decent graphics card but I'm not sure which one would fit best. Which is the most popular these days and how much would I be looking at paying?

I reckon the gigabyte 9500GT from CPL would probably do the job for ya, especially considering its only $79.
I admit, its not the best card in the world, but heck, I use an 8500GT, and it does the job. it will play crysis, not on high settings, but it will play it.
hope that helps ya,
cheers, kk

and perhaps you could spend some of the money you saved on windows 7?
otherwise go something like a gtx 260 or above if you have a bit of cash

If it can't be fixed with old fencing wire, buy some new fencing wire...

What are you looking to play/do with your graphics card?

What's 'decent' to you could be very different to what is 'decent' to me. I think differently to krazikiwi. I would consider an ATI HD4850 as a starting point as anything less than that now would be a waste considering pricing. You can pick one up for around $130 now.

That's true, I don't know much about ATI's cards, so I just found the cheapest semi-decent Nvidia card from cpl. Doesn't mean there aren't better cards or brands for better prices.
But unless the OP needs really high resolutions or wants to do some big video editing projects I'd say the 9500gt would do, the 4850 is probably a bit better, and costs a little more.
It may be an idea to decide how much you want to spend on a graphics card, and then get the best you can for that price.

If it can't be fixed with old fencing wire, buy some new fencing wire...

The 9500GT is pretty craptacula. Depending on the motherboard model, I'd be looking at a HD4670.
