Gedday everybody, I find myself in the market for a laptop.

My oldest is going to uni next year and is looking for a good reliable laptop in the $1200 to $1600 range. He's planning on mechanical engineering and wants something with a numeric keypad.

I'm leaning towards something from the Dell Studio 17 range.

It's a bit of a step in the dark for me as I still run a 10 year old laptop with win 98.

Any thoughts?

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

Ask questions. There's no such thing as a stupid one, just stupid answers. (mostly)

Hey Slatts

I've been very happy with my asus m51va which I was able to get at hardly normals for $1590, I know its at the higher end of the budget but it has more graphical grunt which maybe more important for some of software he may need to run, it also comes with a 24 month warranty. (not in house like the dell unfortunately)

Ahh my thoughts are free at at last...

Gedday midbear, have you been hibernating?

I've had a look at a few reviews for your Asus machine and they all look good. Unfortunately, they're all a bit over a year old which is getting on a bit in laptop years.
I'll have a look at the Asus catalogue though.

Thanks for your input mate.
