Hi All Firstly I would like to say that there have been many reviews of the Lenovo T61 and I will not compete with them. This is a bit like my impressions as a first time user of this “esteemed” notebook. Having owned and used a few “other” notebooks, I was a bit skeptical about the awe that the name Thinkpad seemed to inspire in their users. I needed to be convinced. Well…..I am! Leaving all the technical stuff aside, the feel and usability are just Sooo way ahead of any other notebook I have ever owned or used. No, this is not the start of a fanboy love affair, but it is the start of a different kind of relationship, one that is on another level as far as man (or woman) and machine go. I think it is all about the tactile bit, the keyboard. Again, I was always a bit ho hum about those that went on about it, but I now know why. If subsequent incarnations of this notebook fail in this area and it seems they have, then I am glad I have the last of the gooduns. Just remember, the future is not always progress. Cheers Malai5

I'm liking mine too. The trackpoint is much better than the trackpad in terms of comfort/ergonomics. Vito Cassisi: Tech Blog

I would have to agree about the trackpoint, Cyb. I have an old Toshiba Satellite with a trackpoint and that was just so bad, but it was before touch pads, so I would avoid it like the plague and use a mouse, whenever possible. The trackpad on the T61 is just so smooth and so easy to get used to as your fingers need never come off the keys to use it. Really nice. (Gee, that sounds a bit fanboy, OOPS ) But, heaps of thanks has to go to PCAuthority for the opportunity to experience this. Cheers Malai5

I agree. If only you could turn off its automatic recalibration. Mine always creeps because of it. >_< Vito Cassisi: Tech Blog

I can't say I have had that "creep" problem as yet Cyb. Everything seems to be quite stable in that area. I don't know whether it makes any difference, but are you running XP or Vista? I am running XP Prof SP3 and so far, so good. Cheers Malai5

It happens with both XP and Vista, its a firmware thing. You can replicate it by moving the trackpoint at a constant velocity for a few seconds, then letting go. Edited by .:Cyb3rGlitch:.: 5/11/2008 08:45:04 AM Vito Cassisi: Tech Blog

Nope, Cyb, I don't have that problem. Everything is precise and accurate, trackpoint wise. Cheers Malai5

Odd. It's a widely known issue (or 'feature') according to many laptop forums. Vito Cassisi: Tech Blog

I keep looking to see if it doing it but it's not. After a lot of delays I only just received my T61. I wonder if the problem has been fixed in the latest firmware update. How would I know what version the firmware was in my notebook? Cheers Malai5

Firmware info will probably be available by poking through the system info in a program like System Information For Windows or somewhere in the BIOS. The Lenovo laptops we get through work all have that creeping problem (Mostly R61's). A royal pain in the arse. The only real complaint I have about the Lenovo laptops is that annoying connections manager program that comes on by default. It has caused so much trouble for me. It tries to replicated half the functions of Windows networking, and if you change a setting in windows (such as turning file sharing on), but don't tell it you want it on, it'll go and reset the settings next time you reboot. argh! The security software is equally annoying until you shut it up, but I'll live. They're easy to fix problems.

Hey Squiddy, that is what is called making an idiot proof (well near to) notebook. Do you remember the TV ads for Think Pads a few years ago, where they were saying that they were designed for "Kultzes". That design brief is still in force. Cheers Malai5
