Apple planning 'media-related' New York announcement
The event won't mark an iPad 3 launch, instead looking likely to focus on something publishing or media related.

Apple's first major press conference of 2012 will happen in New York this month, focusing on a media-related announcement, according to a report.

Sources close to the situation said the event would not mark a major product release, like the iPad 3, which is rumoured for a release in the first half of 2012, according to All Things D.

It is believed the event will mark an advertising or publishing announcement, whilst Apple senior vice president of internet software and services Eddie Cue is expected to be involved.

Given the location, some have suggested the announcement may focus on books or magazines.

Cue is responsible for the iBooks Store, as well as Apple's app and iTunes stores. He also runs the recently-launched iCloud offering and was on hand for the launch event of News Corporation's The Daily – an iPad only publication - in 2011.

Apple is expected to hold more significant events throughout the year, including launches of a new iPad, iPhone and iPods.

The man responsible for designing many of those products, Jonathan Ive was recently knighted in the New Year Honours list.

Upon the announcement, Ive said he was "both humbled and sincerely grateful."
