One of those completely unnecessary apps that we still think we can't live without, X is for X-ray lets you swipe to see what makes up everyday objects, like toasters and motorbikes. Also in the series are The Elements and Solar System for iPad so grab your nearest niece or nephew as an excuse stat.

This free camera app scans QR codes and has a few quick access portrait and sports modes – plus once you've finished snapping, you can crop and edit images. UCam also features one click photo sharing between the app and your computer. Basic features, yes – but pretty damn useful.
