Kilobot swarm: size of a coin and cost $15
These little robots are the size of a coin and cost $15 in parts. Cue video.

Radio controlled robots are one of the more exciting tech toys to get your hands on: from this mini-helicopter with a camera used to film a street protest, to these Parrot AR.Drones doing battle in a park.

Meanwhile, though, there's some fascinating research and development going on with "cooperating" robots.

What you see in the video below is a mini "swarm" of little coin-sized machines called Kilobots. While they can be controlled from a computer, the Kilobots also "self-organise". Watch the video and you can see them follow the leader, foraging, and synchronising their light show.

While the Kilobot is being used for testing, it's apparantly possible to buy them too. What we find interesting though, is that there are apparantly efforts to assemble more than 1,000 of them.
