Sony’s VPL-ES1 scores were below-average in every regard, even though in our tests it proved to be a quite capable unit. Its colours and black levels were OK, as was its ability to project a sharp and clear image. Its strength was projecting our DVD, but for data and gaming it was middle of the road.
The VPL-ES1 was one the quietest models we tested by far, which made it perfect for the lounge or for the quiet boardroom. The only caveat was that it did generate a fair bit of heat.
It’s not a bad projector, but it was just not quite good enough to raise itself above our average scores. It had a decent 1,500 Ansi lumens rating so ambient light wouldn’t be a problem, and it also had a great replacement lamp pricing for its rated life.
