This time round Sony has rewritten that equation by offering the CPDG420 19in Flat-CRT
Sony has dominated the Labs in the display technology department since the very beginnings of PC Authority, and it seems the grip has not yet loosened. One of the only serious challenges to the mantle has come from the outstanding range of monitors from Philips, which has on occasion, stolen the accolades with monitors that are on par in quality and significantly cheaper. This time round Sony has rewritten that equation by offering the CPDG420 19in Flat-CRT monitor at a cheaper price of $1,099.
For this you get a premium quality monitor with an aperture grill display that is second to none.
The Sony comes out on top in all but the colour and greyscale test category. If there was any place to fault the image quality of the CPDG420, it would be in the colour timing and horizontal colour registration tests, where the relative timing and position of the colour signals reaching the display are very slightly misaligned. There was also a small moir effect on the moir test screen, though the overall quality of the screen when employed in real world tasks is undeniable, achieving top marks in the subjective rating.
Coupled with simple OSD, and heaps of features including USB, the Sony is the top pick of the Labs.
