REVIEW

Philips 170B4BB

An impressive monitor all-round, the Philips 170B4BB came near the top of the pile for its great mix of specifications, and did extremely well in all of the testing. This was the only monitor in the roundup to rate three perfect scores in performance: with impeccable clock timing and phase locking, the clearest desktop of all tested displays, and the only monitor capable of displaying a truly dark black.

REVIEW

PHILIPS bCool XG1 LC5431

Philips’ bCool projector was very much that - cool. Only the Proxima DP1000X was smaller, but the bCool definitely tackled miniaturisation with more panache.
Philips EXP322
REVIEW

Philips EXP322

A bog standard CD/MP3 player, with a minimal feature set. Apart from the typical controls such as resume, shuffle, repeat and so on, this player also has 'Digital Dynamic Bass Boost' which provides minimal strengthening of the bass signal.

REVIEW

Philips EXP521

There is little to distinguish this from the EXP322, with the exception of a wired remote for basic track controls and the ability to play games on the LCD screen similar to black and white LCD mobile phone gaming. This model also buffers up to 420 seconds at 128Kb/s, providing a more exotic anti-skip protection than the 100 seconds of the EXP322.

PHILIPS 180P2G

This was an extremely difficult category to judge, with pricing, components and performance playing a heavier part in the judging process because of the general disparity between models submitted.

Philips DVDR890
REVIEW

Philips DVDR890

One of the great mysteries that confronts modern man is his inability to program a VCR, so you would have thought that it was incumbent on manufacturers to make programming a DVD recorder simpler. Unfortunately nobody told the author of the Philips DVDR890 instruction manual. It omits a vital step from the general instructions for programming the device to record a show in advance - it took three attempts to get the feature to work, and only after stumbling across the missing instructions in the section for using G-codes (though I wasn't planning to use G-codes).
