Bite-sized adventure gaming that will leave you waiting for episode two.
Sam and Max are with us again, solving crimes by whatever dubious or violent means necessary. There’s little to say about the plot lest we spoil it, but this first episode sees Sam and Max try to foil a trio of former child stars as they terrorise the neighbourhood.
From there, it’s a healthy mix of classic and not-so-classic adventure gaming, as you try to beat each puzzle with a combination of lateral thinking and an inventory full of collected items. Each puzzle has its own logical solution, and if you carefully read and watch how the story unfolds, you won’t have too much trouble moving through the zany story.
The overall production is slick, and the move to 3D has added to, rather than detracted from, the wonderful 2D art that permeated the adventure genre in the 90s. Unfortunately, the game is marred somewhat by a generic arcade scene in the middle, but that said it keeps with the premise of the game, by wrapping the fast action into a puzzle.
As is the nature of an episodic game, you’ll find it’s over too quickly. But the few hours you’ll spend on it is justified by the low US$8.95 price tag. It’s a fun, brain scratching romp that’ll leave you waiting impatiently for the next episode.
