Samsung leverages its flash business to deliver a best of breed solid state drive.

In the past year or so we have seen a pretty massive series of changes go through the SSD market. Not only has the cost per gigabyte dropped, but we have seen numerous manufacturers bow out altogether, as flash makers exert their dominance.

This trend is exemplified by the excellent Samsung 840 Evo series of drives, which are the first to use Samsung’s 19nm NAND modules. Not only do they deliver some seriously impressive performance, but they come with a fascinating software bundle, designed to make the transition to SSD much easier than it used to be. This software handles the tricky things like data migration and steps you through the upgrade process, and makes for an incredibly user-friendly experience. It can also enable a special function called RAPID, which assigns RAM as a kind of SSD cache, making reads and writes even quicker than before. It makes for good use of the excess system memory a lot of modern PCs have, and the boosts are tangible in real world tasks, if not immediately apparent in benchmarks.

We have seen some highly impressive SSDs in recent times, but the 840 Evo is something very special indeed.
