If you’re a fan of great sound while enjoying desktop computing, there’s a couple of directions you can go. Some swear by fully-featured 4.1 setups, but they can be hard to fit into odd-spaced rooms, or rooms where your PC is just part of the rest of the furniture. Others use only headphones, which is great for keeping your flatmates on side, but not always the best way to really enjoy full sound, especially from music or games. No, for us, the sweetspot of desktop sound remains the humble 2.1 set-up, and possibly the best one we’ve seen recently is this ProMedia 2.1 speaker set from Klipsch.
The ProMedia 2.1 series has been pleasing gamers and audiophiles since 2000, and the latest release continues the trend. You’re not getting a lot of extras, like inline controls or fancy LED flourishes, but these are pure engines of amazing sound.
Both the satellites feature a tweeter and driver, and the impressive subwoofer is – if anything – a little too active. It can get in the way of some media, but the punch it gives to games is really enjoyable. Treble and mids are still very strong and clear without having the bass bleed over into the rest of the sound. Bass aside, everything we threw at the ProMedia speakers was crisp and clear.
The high-volume performance is particularly pleasing, as sound doesn’t distort or start to rip. You’re not going to want to max these out every time you turn on your PC, but if your desktop serves duty as the music machine around the house, it’s good to have that versatility.
It also plays well with other devices, such as TVs and audio players or smartphones.
You can definitely find cheaper speakers on the market, but the quality that Klipsch delivers in this package shines through, making the ProMedia 2.1 speakers an investment that will last you for many happy, loud years.
