It wouldn’t be right for a new superhero movie to go by without an accompanying videogame, and Fantastic Four is no exception. In Acclaim’s latest 3D beatem-up, you control not one, but all four heroes, switching between them as you punch, kick and blast your way through wave after wave of enemies.
To make sure each hero gets an innings, certain obstacles can only be bypassed using the abilities of a specific character. Team combos, activated by pressing a specific key combination when in the vicinity of a team-mate, also add variety to the gameplay, however switching between characters in the heat of battle can get fiddly. The beatem-up genre is clearly not designed for PC and though the game is playable with a keyboard and mouse, you’ll have much more fun with a PlayStation-style game controller.
Graphically, Fantastic Four isn’t much to look at, though this could be put down to the game’s console origins (as it’s also available on all the major consoles). The story however, is told well even if the rendered video cut scenes look crude when compared to recent PC games. If the in-game voices sound familiar, it’s because the dialogue has been voiced by the movie cast – a good use of the movie license, but it doesn’t save the game.
Though there isn’t much to the gameplay, and the graphics leave a lot to be desired, with low system specifications and a price that is almost half that of most new games, Fantastic Four should keep fans of the movie entertained for a while.
