While the Celeron's history is dotted with major successes, like the legendary Celeron 300A and overclockability, the name has remained a budget brand. Comparatively the CPU lacks features, with only 128KB of L2 cache to AMD's 256KB.
While the Celeron's history is dotted with major successes, like the legendary Celeron 300A and overclockability, the name has remained a budget brand. Comparatively the CPU lacks features, with only 128KB of L2 cache to AMD's 256KB. Intel's newer Celeron D range, however, rectifies this situation by matching AMD's offering, adding SSE3 SIMD optimisation instructions and a bus upgrade to 533MHz from the 400MHz on our review units.

Only the narrowest of margins separated the 2.4 and 2.6GHz CPUs, although both lagged behind the pack in real world tests and synthetic benchmarking, taking the best part of a minute to cycle our Far Cry benchmark in 800 x 600 at an average 34.12 fps – just enough for reasonable playback.

Falling just shy of 3000 PCMarks, this CPU would find a happy home in a second machine for the kids, a media box or something to replace an aging older Pentium without breaking the bank.

At this price, it does represent reasonably good value, but as is the case with the 2.4GHz variant, it's hard to recommend given the Sempron's good performance-to-price ratio.
