Based on the books and film of the same name. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events follows the story of the mysteriously orphaned Baudelaire siblings and their evil guardian Count Olaf. The books' dark comedy was written on two levels, but the game is squarely aimed at children, and adult fans of the series will be disappointed with the result. An adventure with a small amount of action, it poses few real challenges and things get repetitive very quickly. Even so, it serves its target audience well enough and developer KnowWonder Studio (Amaze Entertainment) has done a terrific job of capturing the environments and general atmosphere of the franchise.
The PC version has an awkward but manageable interface and the small number of control options should see young players grasp things fairly quickly. Some interesting inventions are there to be built once the parts have been found, and a few collectibles are scattered over the levels. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events will succeed if the movie does, but it's still unlikely to stand out from the host of other routine adventure titles on the market.
