When you look at the new Nokia Communicator you're instantly reminded of the old Nokia Communicators: not a great deal has changed style-wise in the intervening years. The thing unfortunately evokes early '90s mobile phones: it has a long body, small display and is not something you could slip into a pocket. Closed, the 9500 is monstrous, but when you open its sideways clamshell design the 9500 comes into its own.
Split open, the 9500 has a very nicely spaced keyboard with application shortcut keys and 600 x 200 colour display. The phone functions are good, the PDA functions are excellent, but the 9500's real strengths are in its offering for the business environment. These include built in Bluetooth (which is handy because of its size you'll want to use a headset while the phone stays in a bag or briefcase) and most impressively in-built 802.11b wireless connectivity. Its software suite and keyboard make it perfect for PDA functionality.
While it's no beauty queen, the 9500 is brutally efficient.
