The slimline HP Photosmart R607 follows on from the
R707 in that it shares many of that camera's fine features and styling, including its plastic/magnesium-alloy casing.
In our tests we were very pleased with the results this camera could produce. While the colour range in our fruit and flowers shot was a little muted by some underperforming contrast and brightness settings, the colour range was excellent. Reds were somewhat muted, however the image was still clean.
Outside in the sunlight though, and the camera performed like a trooper. The shadowed wheel of the car - blurred and indistinct in many shots - is clearly visible here, as it was to the naked eye. If anything there's a slight yellow tinge to the shot, but this really is only noticeable in comparison, and for standalone use you probably would not notice it.
The camera has a fine depth of field, although the focus tapers off quicker than other cameras the further you move from the focal point. And while there are a few image settings we recommended leaving the R607 on its maximum image capture level - lowering it introduced more jaggies and image processing artefacts than you'd expect; good for photoprinting at 6x9 but not for blowing up the image.
The R607 comes with plenty of photo settings - none too high-end - which takes the complexity out of taking good shots. The R607 also features a panoramic feature, which leaves an outline of the previous shot so you can line up the next shot. The R607 also previews these shots in-camera, before sending the individual shots to the PC for stitching together in a third-party app.
The camera itself is slim, and easily fits in a pocket or handbag, meaning it can always be on hand. It's also quick to turn on so you shouldn't miss that hurried shot.
